Tufail had done his schooling from R P School, Malla Bagh on the city outskirts. Presently he was a student of science in 12th class at Government Higher Secondary School, Hazratbal, Srinagar and had an ambition to become a doctor.
If anything differentiated Tufail from other teens, it was his generosity. Tufail’s friends can’t just stop talking about his generosity. “He had some sort of obsession with the needy. Wherever he spotted a person in need of something, he would always help him", they say.
Tufail, the only child to his parents, had few days back (before his martyrdom) alongwith his father Muhammad Ashraf Mattoo made a choice of buying a red-colour Maruti Alto for the family. They were to purchase the car next week, little knowing that he would never be able to drive it.
Tufail was the centre stage of all happenings in the family. Everybody used to envy his shy but intelligent self.
A popular football player of the area, Tufail had knack for the computers as well. During leisure time, it was all him and his computer.
Tufail seemed to have foreseen his death. "He gave me a long and passionate hug while coming out of the mosque after Friday prayers on the ill-fated day. He did not utter a word and just smiled. As if we were meeting for the last time. And it proved true," says Muhammad Afnan, a friend of Tufail.
"Tufail was an extremely gentle boy. He would never look at teachers eye to eye. There were 120 students in that class in 2008, but Tufail was the most polite one,” said Shabir Ahmad, principal of RP School. “He would never ever argue with teachers. All I can say is that his gentleness made him very different from other students.”
Kashmir valley is witnessing a fresh phase of unrest since Tufail's killing with people of the valley demanding India to Quit Kashmir. Already more than 110 people have been martyred in the Kashmir valley during 3 month long turmoil which is still continuing.
